The title Winnie ille Pu is written in Latin. It is the Latin translation of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, translated by the Hungarian scholar and physician Alexander Lenard, whose name is also given as Lénárd Sándor.
The translation was first published in 1958. Rather than simply replacing English words with Latin equivalents, Lenard created a readable literary version that preserved the playful situations, character relationships, and comic tone of Milne’s stories. The unusual project attracted attention well beyond specialist Latin readers.
Winnie ille Pu became especially notable in 1960, when it appeared on The New York Times Best Seller List. The book is widely described as the first foreign-language book to reach that list and the only Latin book ever to do so. That achievement helped demonstrate that Latin could still support popular, humorous children’s literature.
The title can be confused with translations into Esperanto or Polish, which are separate editions. “Winnie ille Pu” specifically identifies Lenard’s Latin version, not a general nickname for Pooh in another language.
