The Japanese word “tsumu,” meaning “to stack,” inspired the name of Disney’s Tsum Tsum merchandise line.
The name reflects the products’ basic physical design. Tsum Tsum plush toys are short, rounded and shaped so that several can be placed one on top of another. Disney introduced the concept in Japan, where the compact toys became popular as character collectibles.
The line later expanded beyond plush toys into small figures, accessories, stationery and digital content. Characters came from Disney and Pixar films, classic animated shorts and other Disney properties.
“Tsumu” is sometimes confused with “tsum tsum” as though it were the name of a character. It is instead the Japanese verb associated with stacking. The repeated form became the branded name for the merchandise line and its rounded character style.
