What is the traditional name of the mountain associated with Noah’s Ark?
Answer
Mount Ararat
Answer
Mount Ararat
Mount Ararat is the traditional mountain associated with Noah’s Ark.
Genesis does not name a single peak called Mount Ararat; it says the ark came to rest in the “mountains of Ararat.” Ararat was an ancient region, generally associated with the area around modern eastern Turkey and the Armenian Highlands.
Over time, tradition increasingly connected the story with the prominent volcanic massif now known as Mount Ararat. The mountain has two main summits, Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat, and has become the best-known proposed location for the ark.
No accepted archaeological evidence has verified that the ark survives there. Reports of discoveries have repeatedly failed to establish a scientifically authenticated vessel. The distinction between the biblical “mountains of Ararat” and the modern mountain is therefore important.
