What is the title of track eight on Metallica’s standard 1991 album, The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Nothing Else Matters is track eight on Metallica’s standard 1991 album, The Black Album.

The song follows Through the Never and precedes Of Wolf and Man in the original 12-track sequence. James Hetfield wrote it while on tour, initially as a personal song connected to a relationship. He was reluctant to present it to the band because of its vulnerability, but it eventually became one of Metallica’s most recognized recordings.

The arrangement differs from the band’s faster thrash-metal material. It opens with a clean guitar figure and develops into a dramatic rock ballad, with orchestral parts added during production at Bob Rock’s suggestion. Hetfield performed the main vocal and guitar parts, while the finished track broadened Metallica’s audience considerably.

Nothing Else Matters was released as a single on April 20, 1992. It became a major international hit and has remained one of the band’s most frequently performed and covered songs.
