Shark Tank is the title of the United States adaptation of the Dragons' Den business-pitch format.
The programme premiered in the United States in 2009 on ABC. Entrepreneurs present companies and products to a panel of investors, known as Sharks, and seek investment in exchange for equity. The show follows the same broad pitch-and-negotiation structure as Dragons' Den, though the panel, branding and production are American.
Shark Tank is based on the international format that also produced Dragons' Den. The two programmes are therefore related, but they are not the same series. British viewers generally see Dragons, while American viewers see Sharks.
The programme should not be confused with The Apprentice, which focuses on candidates competing for a business role, or with business documentaries such as The Profit. Shark Tank centres on entrepreneurs seeking capital and negotiating directly with investors in a pitch setting.
