What is the title of the first sequel to Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” from The Black Album?

The first sequel to Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” from The Black Album is titled “The Unforgiven II.”

The original “The Unforgiven” appeared on Metallica’s 1991 album and was released as its second single. The song explores the individual’s struggle against people or forces attempting to subjugate him, giving the title a thematic meaning beyond a simple revenge story.

Metallica later extended that title into a trilogy. “The Unforgiven II” appeared on the 1997 album Reload, while “The Unforgiven III” appeared on Death Magnetic in 2008. Each song is a separate recording rather than a continuation presented on the original album.

The numbering can cause confusion because the first song is usually called “The Unforgiven,” without a numeral. The sequels add Roman numerals to distinguish them and preserve the connection to the Black Album track.
