Answer
The Atrahasis Epic
Answer
The Atrahasis Epic
The Babylonian flood story featuring Atrahasis is called the Atrahasis Epic.
The Atrahasis Epic is an Akkadian literary work preserved on clay tablets from ancient Mesopotamia. Its flood narrative tells how the god Enki, also called Ea, warns Atrahasis about a destructive flood and helps him survive in a boat. The story is one of the important Mesopotamian flood traditions connected with later accounts.
The work is not the same text as the Epic of Gilgamesh, although the Gilgamesh Epic incorporates a related flood story. In the Gilgamesh version, Utnapishtim recounts the disaster to Gilgamesh. Atrahasis is the central human survivor in the earlier epic bearing his name.
The surviving tablets are incomplete, and the text exists in more than one manuscript tradition. Even so, its flood episode remains a major source for studying ancient Mesopotamian ideas about creation, divine-human relations, population, and catastrophe.
