Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album inspired partly by her personal life is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, alongside a one-hour film broadcast on HBO. The project combines music, poetry, spoken narration, and imagery drawn from African American history, family memory, marriage, grief, anger, resilience, and healing.
Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The album features contributions from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. Its visual presentation made the album a unified narrative rather than simply a collection of separate music videos.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received widespread critical acclaim. It earned nine Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and won Best Urban Contemporary Album. The title is commonly linked to a proverb about making lemonade from lemons, which appears in the project’s wider imagery.
