Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about love, betrayal, and Black womanhood is titled Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after an HBO premiere of its accompanying hour-long film. The project combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and imagery into a unified work exploring relationships, family history, identity, race, and resilience.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” It received widespread critical acclaim and won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. “Formation” also won Best Music Video at the same ceremony.
Lemonade is distinct from The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé’s 2019 companion album inspired by the film. It is also different from Black Is King, her 2020 visual album and film built around music from The Gift.
