Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about Black womanhood and family heritage is Lemonade.
Lemonade premiered on HBO on April 23, 2016, alongside the release of its audio album. Its songs and film draw on themes including betrayal, healing, ancestry, motherhood, race, and the experiences of Black women in the United States.
The project includes guest appearances from artists such as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. It also incorporates poetry by Warsan Shire, whose writing helps connect the album’s sections.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Its cultural references and visual structure led to extensive discussion of Beyoncé’s family history and marriage, although the work is also broader than a single personal narrative.
