Beyoncé’s 2016 album built around “Formation” is Lemonade.
Lemonade is Beyoncé’s sixth studio album, released on April 23, 2016. It was accompanied by an hour-long film broadcast on HBO and described as a visual album. The record combines pop, R&B, hip-hop, soul, rock, country, blues, and electronic influences while presenting a connected story of grief, betrayal, reconciliation, and Black identity.
“Formation” was released before the album and became its best-known lead single. Other tracks include “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The album features guest appearances by artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd.
Lemonade earned widespread critical acclaim and won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It is sometimes confused with Renaissance, Beyoncé’s 2022 studio album, but the two releases belong to different planned projects and have distinct musical identities.
