The villain Mr. Big in the James Bond film Live and Let Die is the alias of Dr. Kananga.
Dr. Kananga is the fictional prime minister of the Caribbean island of San Monique. He secretly operates as the criminal figure Mr. Big, using a chain of restaurants and criminal networks to distribute heroin and manipulate events in the United States.
Yaphet Kotto played both Kananga and Mr. Big in the 1973 film, which was Roger Moore’s first appearance as James Bond. The dual identity allows the story to connect political power with organized crime, while the plot also includes the drug lord’s fields of poppies on San Monique.
Mr. Big is sometimes remembered as if he were a separate character, but the film explicitly reveals that he and Kananga are the same person. The name Kananga also echoes the film’s Caribbean setting and the character’s public role as a national leader.
