The official name for the throwing line in darts is the oche.
The oche marks the point behind which a player must stand when throwing. In standard steel-tip competition, the horizontal distance from the board face to the oche is 7 feet 9¼ inches, or 2.37 metres. A player may lean forward, but the feet must not cross the line during the throw.
The origin of the word is uncertain. Popular stories connect it with chalk advertisements or a brewery name, but no single explanation has been conclusively established. The term is nevertheless standard in modern darts vocabulary.
The oche is sometimes called the throw line, toe line or shooting line by casual players. Those descriptions are understandable, but “oche” is the recognised darts term used in rules, broadcasts and tournament coverage.
