What is the official currency of Mongolia?
Answer
Mongolian tögrög
Answer
Mongolian tögrög
The Mongolian tögrög is the official currency of Mongolia.
The tögrög, also spelled tugrik or tögrög, was introduced in 1925. It replaced a mixture of foreign currencies and other forms of money, giving the Mongolian People’s Republic its first national currency. The Bank of Mongolia is responsible for issuing it.
The currency’s ISO 4217 code is MNT, and its symbol is ₮. One tögrög is formally divided into 100 möngö, although möngö coins are no longer commonly used because their values are extremely small compared with modern prices.
“Tögrög” means “round” in Mongolian, a reference to the shape of a coin. The name is sometimes written “tugrik” in English-language sources, but “Mongolian tögrög” is the standard modern form used in many financial and reference contexts. It should not be confused with the som, used by several Central Asian countries.
