What is the official currency of Bhutan, whose name means “silver” in Dzongkha?

The story behind the answer

The official currency of Bhutan, whose name means “silver” in Dzongkha, is the Bhutanese ngultrum.

Bhutan introduced the ngultrum in 1974, replacing the Bhutanese rupee. The currency is subdivided into 100 chhertum, although low-value coins are not commonly encountered in everyday transactions.

The ngultrum is pegged at par with the Indian rupee, meaning one ngultrum has the same official value as one Indian rupee. Indian rupee notes are also accepted in Bhutan under rules set by Bhutanese authorities.

The currency is issued by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan. Its ISO 4217 code is BTN, while “ngultrum” is often translated as “silver” or associated with a silver coin.
