What is the nickname of the original Xbox controller model?

The story behind the answer

Duke was the nickname of the original Xbox controller model.

The first Xbox controller was officially called the Xbox Controller, but players and journalists commonly called it the Duke because of its unusually large size. It was designed for the original Xbox, which launched in 2001, and was substantially larger than many contemporary console controllers.

The Duke included two analog sticks, a directional pad, six face or shoulder buttons, two triggers, and the Xbox, Back, and Start buttons. Its size attracted criticism, especially from players with smaller hands. Microsoft subsequently introduced the Controller S, a smaller design that became the standard controller in many markets.

The nickname was later preserved through licensed re-releases. Hyperkin produced a modernized Duke controller for Xbox One and Windows in 2018, adding features such as a headset port while retaining the large original shape. The name therefore refers to a specific controller design, not to the Xbox console itself.
