Answer
The bottle opener
The distinctive opening near the top of Shanghai World Financial Center is nicknamed the bottle opener.
The 492-metre tower in Shanghai’s Pudong district has a large trapezoidal aperture near its summit. The opening reduces the effects of wind pressure on the building and gives the skyscraper its instantly recognizable profile.
The original design reportedly used a circular opening, but that concept was changed because it could evoke the sun symbol on the Chinese flag and create unwanted visual associations. The trapezoidal solution also led observers to compare the completed building to a bottle opener.
Shanghai World Financial Center is often confused with Shanghai Tower, which stands nearby and is taller. The two towers form part of the famous Lujiazui skyline, along with Jin Mao Tower.
