What is the nickname of Rocky Balboa?

The story behind the answer

Rocky Balboa’s nickname is “The Italian Stallion.”

The name reflects Rocky’s fictional Italian-American heritage and his identity as a proud Philadelphia boxer. It is used as his ring name and became one of the defining phrases associated with the Rocky franchise. Rocky is portrayed as a working-class fighter whose determination allows him to challenge opponents with far greater fame and resources.

Rocky Balboa was created by Sylvester Stallone, who also played him throughout the original Rocky films and later appearances. The character first appeared in Rocky in 1976, when he is offered a surprise shot at the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed.

“The Southpaw” describes a boxing stance Rocky uses, not his main nickname. He is also called “The Pride of Philadelphia” in the franchise, but “The Italian Stallion” is the canonical answer to this question. The character’s creation was partly influenced by underdog boxer Chuck Wepner and by legends such as Rocky Marciano.
