What is the name of the whaling vessel in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water?

The story behind the answer

The whaling vessel in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is called the SeaDragon.

The SeaDragon is a large human hunting ship used by the Resources Development Administration, or RDA, on Pandora. Its crew pursues tulkun, highly intelligent whale-like marine creatures whose brain fluid is harvested for a valuable substance known as amrita. The vessel becomes the setting for the film’s climactic conflict.

The ship’s name is sometimes confused with the names of other fictional vehicles in the Avatar universe. The SeaDragon is not the spacecraft that brought humans to Pandora and is separate from the military and transport craft seen in the first film. Its design emphasizes the sequel’s shift from Pandora’s forests to the oceans and reefs inhabited by the Metkayina clan.

Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in 2022, thirteen years after Avatar. The film expanded the fictional world with underwater motion-capture performances and introduced the tulkun-hunting storyline as a major source of conflict between the RDA and Pandora’s inhabitants.
