Black Is King is the visual album Beyoncé released in 2020 alongside a film on Disney+.
The project was written, directed, and executive-produced by Beyoncé and released on July 31, 2020. It reimagines the music from The Lion King: The Gift, her 2019 companion album to Disney’s The Lion King remake.
Black Is King uses music videos, choreography, fashion, and symbolic imagery to explore Black identity, ancestry, family, and global African diasporic culture. The film features artists including Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and several musicians who appeared on The Lion King: The Gift.
It is often confused with Lemonade, another Beyoncé visual album, but Lemonade was released in 2016 and has a different narrative and musical basis. Black Is King was distributed internationally through Disney+.
