Judge Claude Frollo
Answer
Judge Claude Frollo
The villain in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is Judge Claude Frollo.
In Disney’s 1996 animated film, Frollo is Paris’s Minister of Justice and the adoptive guardian of Quasimodo. He raises Quasimodo in Notre Dame’s bell tower while teaching him that the outside world is corrupt and dangerous. Frollo’s authority, cruelty, and hypocrisy drive much of the story’s conflict.
Frollo becomes obsessed with Esmeralda and uses his political power to pursue her and persecute the Romani community. His religious language does not make him morally upright; instead, the film deliberately contrasts his public piety with his lust, prejudice, and willingness to commit violence. His “Hellfire” sequence is one of Disney animation’s clearest portraits of a villain wrestling with destructive desire.
Viewers sometimes confuse Frollo with Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer, or Phoebus, the soldier who opposes him. In Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, Frollo is an archdeacon rather than a judge, but Claude Frollo remains the central antagonist in both versions.
