The Sikh throne of temporal authority founded by Guru Hargobind is the Akal Takht.
Akal Takht means “Throne of the Timeless One.” Guru Hargobind established it in 1606 opposite the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. Its location expresses the Sikh concept that spiritual and temporal responsibilities belong together rather than existing as completely separate spheres.
The Akal Takht became a place where the Sikh community discussed collective affairs, issued decisions, and addressed questions involving religious and social responsibility. Guru Hargobind’s period also saw a stronger emphasis on defending the community after the execution of his father, Guru Arjan.
The Akal Takht is one of the five historic Sikh takhts, or seats of authority. The other four are associated with Patna Sahib, Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, Hazur Sahib at Nanded, and Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo.
