What is the name of the reusable suborbital rocket flown by Blue Origin?
Answer
New Shepard
Answer
New Shepard
New Shepard is Blue Origin’s reusable suborbital rocket.
Named after astronaut Alan Shepard, New Shepard is designed to carry a crew capsule and research payloads on brief flights above the internationally recognized 100-kilometre Kármán line. Its booster launches vertically, separates from the capsule, and lands vertically using engines and landing gear. The capsule returns under parachutes.
Blue Origin first successfully landed a New Shepard booster in November 2015. The system later began carrying people, including Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos on the first crewed flight on July 20, 2021. New Shepard flights are suborbital, so the vehicle does not build enough horizontal speed to remain in orbit.
New Shepard is often confused with New Glenn, Blue Origin’s much larger orbital launch vehicle. New Glenn is intended for orbital missions, while New Shepard is designed for short research and passenger flights.
