The red panda protagonist in Turning Red is Mei Lee. Her full name is Meilin Lee, but the film consistently shortens it to Mei, making “Mei Lee” the canonical quiz answer.
Mei is a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl living in Toronto in 2002. She helps her parents, Ming and Jin, care for the family temple while balancing school, friendship, and her intense enthusiasm for the boy band 4*Town.
After a frightening emotional episode, Mei discovers that she transforms into a giant red panda whenever she experiences powerful feelings. The transformation is hereditary: her ancestor Sun Yee received the ability, and it passed through the family’s female descendants. Mei eventually chooses to keep her panda form rather than seal it away.
Priya and Abby are Mei’s friends, while Ming is her overprotective mother, so none of those names identifies the protagonist. The character is voiced by Rosalie Chiang in Pixar’s 2022 film, directed by Domee Shi.
