What is the name of the protagonist in the Pixar film 'WALL-E'?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist in Pixar’s WALL-E is WALL-E, the lonely waste-collecting robot left operating on an abandoned Earth.

His name is an acronym for “Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth-Class.” In the film’s distant future, WALL-E spends centuries compacting humanity’s enormous piles of garbage after people have escaped to the starship Axiom. His curiosity grows as he collects intriguing objects, including items connected with the old musical Hello, Dolly!

WALL-E’s story changes when EVE, an advanced probe sent to search for signs of plant life, arrives on Earth. He follows her into space and ultimately helps humans rediscover their connection to their home planet. EVE is his companion and love interest, not the protagonist; M-O is a cleaning robot aboard the Axiom, while the Captain commands the ship.

The character was voiced largely through expressive sounds designed by sound designer Ben Burtt. WALL-E’s machine-like design and limited speech make his emotions readable through movement, posture, eyes and sound.
