What is the name of the PlayStation 5’s 3D audio technology?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 5’s 3D audio technology is called Tempest 3D AudioTech.

Sony developed the Tempest Engine as a dedicated audio-processing system in the PlayStation 5. It is intended to create positional sound effects, allowing players to perceive audio around them rather than only through conventional left-right stereo channels.

The system can work with headphones and compatible television or home-theater setups. Sony also introduced the Pulse 3D wireless headset as an accessory designed to showcase the console’s spatial-audio features, but Pulse 3D is the headset’s name, not the underlying technology.

Tempest 3D AudioTech should not be confused with Dolby Atmos, a separate audio format used across many entertainment devices. The two can both describe immersive sound, but they are not the same product.
