The PlayStation 4 controller’s built-in clickable touch surface is called the touchpad.
Sony introduced the touchpad as a distinctive feature of the DualShock 4, the standard controller bundled with the PlayStation 4. It can detect touch input and can also be pressed like a button. Games use it for functions such as menus, gestures, camera controls, or alternate inputs, although its exact role varies by title.
The touchpad is not the same as a touchscreen: it does not display images. It is also separate from the controller’s motion sensors, speaker, light bar, and conventional buttons. The DualShock 4’s design was specific to the PS4 generation, although it could be used with some other PlayStation hardware and software.
