What is the name of the moon where James Cameron’s Avatar is set?

The story behind the answer

James Cameron’s Avatar is set primarily on the fictional moon Pandora.

Pandora orbits the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The moon is home to the Na’vi, a blue-skinned humanoid species whose culture and environment are central to the film’s story.

The setting was designed as a richly interconnected ecosystem. Important locations include the floating Hallelujah Mountains, the Tree of Souls, and the forest surrounding the Na’vi clan of Omaticaya. Human mining operations threaten Pandora’s natural resources and communities.

Pandora is sometimes mistakenly called a planet because it functions as the film’s main world. In the story’s astronomy, however, it is specifically a moon. The sequel Avatar: The Way of Water expands the setting by introducing Pandora’s ocean-dwelling Metkayina clan.
