Mr. Dark is Rayman's archenemy and the principal villain of the original Rayman, released in 1995. At the start of the game, he steals the Great Protoon, a magical object that maintains harmony between nature and the people of Rayman's world. Its theft destabilizes the Electoons and leaves them vulnerable to capture.
Rayman sets out to recover the Great Protoon and rescue the imprisoned Electoons. During the adventure, Mr. Dark also kidnaps Betilla the Fairy, who has been helping Rayman by granting him new powers. The final confrontation takes place in the Candy Château, Mr. Dark's stronghold.
Mr. Dark is sometimes confused with villains from later games. Admiral Razorbeard leads the Robo-Pirates in Rayman 2, while André is the Dark Lum responsible for the Hoodlum crisis in Rayman 3.
