What is the name of the iconic main stage at Glastonbury?

The story behind the answer

The iconic main stage at Glastonbury is the Pyramid Stage. It is the festival’s largest and most recognisable performance area, known for its distinctive pyramid-shaped structure and major headline concerts.

The first Pyramid Stage appeared at the 1971 Glastonbury Fayre. Designed by Bill Harkin, it was inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza and built as a one-tenth-scale structure from scaffolding and metal sheeting. The original stage was positioned over what was described as a “blind spring”.

The stage has not always looked the same. The 1994 Pyramid Stage burned down shortly before the festival, so organisers constructed a temporary replacement in time for the event. The Pyramid Stage name is sometimes used loosely for Glastonbury’s main stage in every year, although the headlining stage was not officially called that in 1998 because it lacked its familiar pyramid form.

Major acts including David Bowie, Radiohead, Beyoncé, Coldplay and Elton John have performed there.
