The gymnastics event performed on a 10-centimetre-wide beam is the balance beam. Gymnasts perform leaps, turns, jumps, acrobatic skills and dance sequences while maintaining control on the narrow apparatus.

The modern balance beam is about 5 metres long and stands roughly 1.25 metres above the floor. Although the beam’s upper surface is only 10 centimetres wide, its length allows routines to combine choreography with tumbling and other difficult elements. A gymnast’s routine is judged for difficulty, execution, artistry and balance.

Balance beam is one of the four women’s artistic gymnastics apparatus events, alongside vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. It is often confused with floor exercise because both include dance and acrobatics, but floor routines take place on a spring floor without an elevated apparatus. Falls, wobbles, pauses and stepping off the beam can all reduce the score.
