The flying helper character first seen in Rayman 2: The Great Escape is Murfy. He is a small, airborne guide who explains the world, gameplay systems and abilities to Rayman.
Murfy’s role is unusual because he functions partly as a character and partly as an in-game tutorial. Rayman 2 describes him as a “flying encyclopaedia,” and he provides optional explanations about subjects such as Lums, enemies, objects and the history of the Glade of Dreams. This lets the game teach players without relying entirely on a conventional instruction manual.
Murfy is not the same character as Globox, Rayman’s blue friend, or Betilla, the fairy associated with Rayman’s powers. He also differs from André, who is introduced as a major character in Rayman 3. Murfy returns in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, where his guidance becomes more openly sarcastic and self-aware. In later games, including Rayman Legends, he can take a more active gameplay role, but his defining introduction remains his helpful flying-guide appearance in Rayman 2.
