Most of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins takes place in the fictional Gotham City.
Gotham is presented as a large American city marked by organized crime, political corruption, and a sharp divide between wealthy districts and struggling neighborhoods. Bruce Wayne returns there after years away and adopts the Batman identity to confront the forces threatening the city.
The movie used several real locations to portray Gotham. Chicago supplied major urban imagery, while other filming took place in England and Iceland. The filmmakers combined practical locations, sets, and visual effects rather than treating Gotham as a single real-world city.
Gotham City is sometimes confused with Metropolis, the home of Superman in DC Comics. They are separate fictional cities, although both are commonly depicted as major American urban centers. Batman Begins also uses Gotham’s elevated monorail as an important part of the climax.
