What is the name of the emotion voiced by Amy Poehler in Inside Out?

The story behind the answer

The emotion voiced by Amy Poehler in Inside Out is Joy.

Joy is one of the personified emotions inside Riley Andersen's mind and is primarily responsible for helping Riley experience happiness and maintain positive memories. She is energetic, optimistic, and determined to keep Riley cheerful, especially after Riley's family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco.

In the 2015 Pixar film, Joy accidentally becomes separated from Headquarters along with Sadness. Their attempt to return forces Joy to understand that Sadness is not simply a problem to eliminate. Riley needs several emotions working together, and sad experiences can help people receive comfort, connect with others, and process major changes.

Amy Poehler provides Joy's voice in the original English-language version. Joy is often confused with Sadness because the two characters share the film's central journey, but Sadness is voiced by Phyllis Smith. Other core emotions include Anger, Fear, and Disgust, voiced respectively by Lewis Black, Bill Hader, and Mindy Kaling. Joy also returns in the 2024 sequel Inside Out 2.
