What is the name of the DNA-profiling method developed by Alec Jeffreys in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Genetic fingerprinting is the DNA-profiling method developed by Alec Jeffreys in 1984.

Jeffreys discovered that certain regions of human DNA contain highly variable repeated sequences. By analyzing a combination of these variable regions, he produced a pattern that was very likely to differ between unrelated individuals. The technique became known as DNA fingerprinting.

Its first major public application involved an immigration case in the United Kingdom in 1985, and it was soon adopted in forensic investigations and paternity testing. Modern forensic profiling generally analyzes selected short tandem repeat markers rather than the original multilocus patterns.

DNA profiling identifies biological samples through statistical comparison; it does not automatically prove how a sample arrived at a scene. Identical twins are a notable limitation because they usually share the same standard nuclear DNA profile.
