Which international project produced the first publicly announced draft sequence of the human genome in 2000?
Answer
Human Genome Project
Answer
Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project produced the first publicly announced draft sequence of the human genome in 2000.
This international research effort officially began in 1990, coordinated in the United States by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy. Scientists in several countries built genetic and physical maps and developed methods for sequencing the approximately three-billion-base-pair human genome.
A draft was jointly announced by public-sector leaders and Celera Genomics in June 2000. The publicly funded project declared completion of its essentially finished sequence in April 2003, timed to the fiftieth anniversary of the publication describing DNA’s double-helix structure.
The project did not immediately identify every human gene or explain every trait. Much of the genome was initially difficult to assemble, and the reference sequence represented a composite rather than one individual’s complete genetic identity. Later projects improved the reference and catalogued variation across many populations.
