The Disney subsidiary that owns the rights to Star Wars is Lucasfilm.
George Lucas founded Lucasfilm in 1971, and the company became synonymous with Star Wars after producing the original film, released in 1977. Lucasfilm’s business also grew to include Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, animation, games and other production operations. Disney announced its agreement to acquire Lucasfilm on October 30, 2012, in a deal valued at about $4.05 billion.
The acquisition was completed on December 21, 2012, making Lucasfilm a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios. That distinction matters: Disney is the ultimate corporate owner, while Lucasfilm remains the named studio and franchise steward associated with Star Wars. The answer is not 20th Century Studios, even though 20th Century Fox distributed the original films and retained some distribution rights for a period. Pixar and Marvel are also Disney subsidiaries, but they control different creative properties.
