Donald Duck is the Disney character who is a duck wearing a sailor suit.
Donald is typically depicted as a white duck in a sailor shirt, cap, and bow tie. Walt Disney and his artists gave him the nautical outfit partly because ducks and sailors are both associated with water. His distinctive appearance is paired with a short temper, energetic personality, and famously difficult-to-understand voice.
Donald made his first screen appearance in The Wise Little Hen in 1934. His second appearance, in Orphan’s Benefit later that year, established him as a comic foil for Mickey Mouse. Clarence Nash created Donald’s original voice, which became one of the character’s defining features. Huey is one of Donald’s nephews, while Scrooge McDuck is his wealthy uncle; neither is the standard sailor-suited character described here. Daffy Duck belongs to Warner Bros., not Disney.
