The deep-sea research station in James Cameron’s The Abyss is called Deep Core.
Deep Core is an experimental underwater drilling platform operated by a small civilian crew. After a nearby submarine is damaged, the crew is drawn into a recovery mission that places them in conflict with the U.S. Navy SEAL team sent to investigate. The station’s isolated setting provides the film with both its technical challenges and its claustrophobic atmosphere.
The Abyss was released in 1989 and stars Ed Harris as Virgil “Bud” Brigman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Lindsey Brigman. Cameron developed the film around underwater production problems, and the shoot became known for its demanding conditions.
The film is sometimes confused with Cameron’s other science-fiction settings. Hadley’s Hope is the colony in Aliens, while the Nostromo is the spaceship in Alien. Deep Core is specifically the underwater platform in The Abyss.
