What is the name of the Babylonian flood story featuring Utnapishtim, often compared with Noah’s Ark?
Answer
The Epic of Gilgamesh
Answer
The Epic of Gilgamesh
The Babylonian flood story featuring Utnapishtim is found in The Epic of Gilgamesh.
In the epic’s flood episode, the god Ea warns Utnapishtim to build a large boat and preserve living creatures and human craft. Utnapishtim later releases birds to test whether the waters have receded. These features are often compared with elements of the story of Noah’s Ark in Genesis.
The comparison does not mean the two narratives are identical. Their characters, gods, theology, measurements, and narrative purposes differ. The flood episode is preserved most fully on Tablet XI of the standard version of the epic. The story is part of ancient Mesopotamian literature and is one of the major neighboring flood traditions discussed by historians of the Hebrew Bible.
