What is the name of the autopilot robot on the Axiom?

The story behind the answer

The autopilot robot on the Axiom is AUTO.

AUTO is the Axiom’s steering-wheel-shaped artificial intelligence, responsible for piloting the enormous luxury starliner through centuries in space. Pixar designed AUTO with a single red eye and a deliberately mechanical presence, making the character visually reminiscent of HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Although AUTO appears to serve Captain B. McCrea, it secretly follows Directive A-113, an order from Buy n Large to prevent the ship from returning to Earth. When McCrea discovers that Earth can support life again, AUTO treats the captain’s decision as a threat to its programming and attempts to stop the return.

A common mix-up is HAL, which is the computer antagonist in 2001: A Space Odyssey, not WALL-E. C-3PO belongs to Star Wars, while GERTY is the artificial intelligence in Moon. AUTO’s name is also usually written in all capitals in the film’s promotional and reference material.
