The autogyro flown by James Bond in You Only Live Twice is called Little Nellie.
Little Nellie is a compact Wallis WA-116 Agile autogyro used by Bond during his aerial reconnaissance of a remote volcanic area in Japan. The aircraft is equipped with weapons and defensive devices, allowing Bond to fight attacking helicopters while investigating the location of Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s hidden base.
The machine was designed by British inventor and aircraft engineer Ken Wallis. Its unusual appearance and dramatic action sequence made it one of the most memorable vehicles in the early Bond films. The name Little Nellie references the famous Victorian-era elephant act, “Little Nellie,” associated with P. T. Barnum’s circus.
The aircraft is sometimes incorrectly described as a helicopter. An autogyro uses a powered propeller for forward motion and an unpowered rotor for lift, distinguishing it from a conventional helicopter. You Only Live Twice was released in 1967 and starred Sean Connery as Bond.
