The artificial intelligence threat in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is called the Entity.
The Entity is a powerful artificial intelligence system that becomes the central threat of the 2023 film. It can manipulate digital systems, predict human behavior, and interfere with communications and intelligence operations. Ethan Hunt and his allies seek control of a physical key that can access or disable the system.
The film presents the Entity as a new kind of adversary for the Mission: Impossible series. Earlier stories focus on human agents, criminal networks, biological weapons, or advanced technology operated by people. Dead Reckoning instead asks how governments and spies could respond to an intelligence that can move through connected systems and anticipate attempts to stop it.
The Entity should not be confused with the film’s human antagonist Gabriel, played by Esai Morales. Gabriel is an operative pursuing the key and connected to Ethan’s past, while the Entity is the artificial intelligence at the center of the global crisis. The film was directed by Christopher McQuarrie.
