What is the name of LEGO’s preschool brick system introduced in 1969?

The story behind the answer

LEGO DUPLO is the preschool brick system introduced by the LEGO Group in 1969.

DUPLO bricks are designed for younger children and are generally twice the dimensions of corresponding standard LEGO bricks in length, width and height relationships. Their larger size makes them easier for small hands to grasp and reduces the risk of accidental swallowing.

Despite their larger scale, DUPLO elements are compatible with standard LEGO bricks. A standard LEGO brick can connect to the exposed studs of a DUPLO brick, allowing families to combine the two systems in some models.

The name DUPLO comes from the Latin word for “double,” reflecting the system’s enlarged dimensions. LEGO later expanded DUPLO with animals, vehicles, figures and themed playsets for early childhood construction.
