Disney's streaming service launched in 2019 was Disney+.
Disney+ officially launched on November 12, 2019, beginning in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. The service was designed to bring Disney's own library together with content from major brands such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.
Its launch followed Disney's strategic shift toward direct-to-consumer streaming. Disney had already invested in streaming technology through BAMTech and had removed many of its films from competing services in preparation for Disney+. The platform quickly attracted attention because it combined familiar franchises with a relatively low introductory price.
The rollout was gradual rather than worldwide on one date. Disney+ expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico on November 19, 2019, then reached additional European markets in 2020 and India in 2020 through the Disney+ Hotstar arrangement. Hulu is also associated with Disney's streaming business, but it is a separate service, while Netflix and Amazon Prime are competitors.
