Dior’s signature cane-inspired handbag pattern is called Cannage.
The motif is associated with the elegant Napoleon III-style chairs that furnished Christian Dior’s couture salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Their woven cane backs and seats influenced the geometric design, which became part of Dior’s visual identity.
Cannage is especially recognizable on Dior handbags, where its repeated diamond shapes are often quilted into leather. The pattern has also appeared on shoes, accessories, jewellery, watches and other Dior products.
Cannage is sometimes confused with Dior’s Oblique pattern, which uses repeating diagonal Dior lettering. It is also distinct from Toile de Jouy, a printed decorative fabric design used by the house. The pattern’s name refers to cane work rather than to a particular handbag model.
