What is the name of Chanel’s famous perfume introduced in 1921?

The story behind the answer

Chanel’s famous perfume introduced in 1921 is Chanel No. 5.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel commissioned the fragrance from perfumer Ernest Beaux. It became notable for its complex aldehydic composition, which differed from the single-flower scents popular at the time. The name came from the sample number Chanel selected during the development process.

Chanel No. 5 was launched on 5 May 1921, a date associated with the fifth sample. Its minimalist bottle and simple label helped make the fragrance part of Chanel’s visual identity. Marilyn Monroe’s later remark that she wore “five drops” to bed greatly strengthened its cultural fame, although she was not a Chanel advertising model at the time.

The perfume is often confused with Chanel’s fashion house itself, but it is a distinct fragrance product. Chanel No. 5 remains one of the best-known luxury perfumes in the world.
