Black Is King
Answer
Black Is King
Beyoncé’s visual album released with The Lion King: The Gift is Black Is King.
Disney+ released Black Is King on July 31, 2020. Beyoncé wrote, directed, and executive-produced the project, which reimagines themes and songs connected to her 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift.
The project uses music videos, dance, fashion, and symbolic imagery to tell a story centered on a young African king and his journey toward identity and belonging. It features artists including Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Lupita Nyong’o, and a range of African and international musicians.
Black Is King was inspired by the 2019 remake of The Lion King, in which Beyoncé voiced Nala. It is not the same project as Homecoming, which documents her 2018 Coachella performances, or Lemonade, her 2016 visual album. Those works have distinct concepts and release histories.
