Beyoncé voiced Nala in the 2019 film The Lion King.
The Lion King is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s 1994 traditionally animated film. Directed by Jon Favreau, the 2019 version retells the story of Simba, a young lion who must reclaim his place as king after his father’s death. Nala is Simba’s childhood friend and later becomes his partner.
Beyoncé joined a voice cast that included Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, and Alfre Woodard as Sarabi. Her casting made Nala one of the film’s most recognizable celebrity-voiced characters.
Beyoncé also contributed new music to the project. She performed “Spirit,” an original song associated with the film, and curated the companion album The Lion King: The Gift. Nala is sometimes confused with Sarabi, Simba’s mother, or Kiara, a character from the later sequel The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.
