What is the name of Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film inspired by The Lion King: The Gift?

Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film inspired by The Lion King: The Gift is Black Is King.

Black Is King was written, directed, and executive-produced by Beyoncé. Disney+ released it on July 31, 2020, about a year after The Lion King remake and its companion album The Lion King: The Gift.

The film uses the themes of a young African prince’s journey while presenting a broader visual celebration of Black identity, family, heritage, and global African culture. Its music comes primarily from The Gift, which Beyoncé described as a love letter to Africa.

The project features appearances by artists including Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Lupita Nyong’o, Pharrell Williams, and various performers from Africa and the diaspora. It is not a direct remake of The Lion King; instead, it reinterprets related ideas through music videos, choreography, fashion, and symbolic storytelling.
